Helen D. Sammarco

Helen Sammarco passed away on September 27, 2023 at the age of 84, leaving behind a rich legacy of art, music, and a love for life's simple pleasures. Born in Charleroi, Pennsylvania and growing up in Monessen as a young adult, she worked in New York City for Eastern Airlines. In 1965 Helen moved to Massachusetts where she fell in love with the ocean, Sparking her adventurous side Helen loved deep sea fishing and owning her own sailboat, was found out on the water navigating much of the New England coast and islands. The mountains of New England gave Helen the winter enjoyment of skiing. Much of her life was spent in the Boston area before moving to Northwest Arkansas and eventually retiring in Joplin, Missouri. Her love for music started at the age of 3 when she took her first piano lesson. Trained as a concert pianist she shared her talent through instruction teaching to children in the neighborhood. Helen was a talented artist. She began with oil painting and explored various artistic mediums before specializing in the art of fine China painting.. She not only created beautiful art herself but also shared her near 40 year passion by teaching this craft of fine art;, ensuring that her artistic legacy would endure for years to come. She was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, reflecting her deep appreciation for her country's history and heritage. Helen was a devoted New England Patriots football fan, but enjoyed watching her home town teams, the Steelers and Chiefs; never missing a game on TV. Helen is preceded in death by her husband Carmino Sammarco, parents Jay C and Helen M Schumm , brother Jay F. Schumm, and nephew Brett D Schumm.. She is survived by her daughters Deborah F Broderick, Lori Marie Malmberg, Paula Miller, Cathy Teague and her sons Michael Sammarco and Matthew Sammarco; Sister-in-law Donice Schumm, niece Laurie Schumm- Coyn and nephew Jay D Schumm, as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. A private celebration of Helen's life was held with close family and friends. Those wishing to honor her life can make donations to the American Lung Association. Helen's memory will live on through her art, music, and the cherished moments shared with family and friends. She will be remembered as a loving daughter, mother, grandmother, teacher, artist, musician, and adventurer. Her legacy is a testament to a life well-lived, filled with creativity, passion, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life. Arrangements are by Midland Cremation Society of Joplin.
